Broncos DJ Williams Suspended By NFL For DWI

The Denver broncos encounter the loss of leading tackler D.J. Williams to an NFL suspension after his second dwi arrest. The linebacker and defensive co-captain was indicted for drunk driving after being busted in Denver early on Friday morning, only a few hours before he was meant to report to his job at Dove Valley.

It’s his second such arrest. He pleaded guilty in September 2005 to driving drunk and was ordered to complete 24 hours of community service. Following that, he claimed he came to the realization he had to obtain a designated driver whenever he went out partying, and the team provides drivers to its participants but Williams failed to employ one Friday.

District attorney’s spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough says Williams was stopped at 2:40 a.m. Friday for driving without headlights on. He was cited with DUI, a misdemeanor, together with driving without headlights. He was directed to appear in court Dec. 13.

Williams, a 7th-year pro from the University of Miami, probably will be suspended for numerous competitions in football bets for breaking the NFL’s personal conduct guidelines. San Diego receiver Vincent Jackson is undergoing a 3-game suspension for multiple DUI arrests, that’s reduced from a prior four-game penalty.

A conviction isn’t required for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend a player lacking pay. The league’s rules declares: “If the Commissioner finds that … the player has had prior drug or alcohol-related misconduct, increased discipline up to and including suspension may be imposed.” It might take time for the NFL to examine Williams’ case, so there is a chance he could still play Sunday.

Williams turned up only in short , at the team’s headquarters only prior to noon Friday before driving off whereas his teammates were at practice. The Denver Broncos (2-6) confront the league’s top rushing team Sunday when the Chiefs (5-3) visit Invesco Field

If he doesn’t perform, other options incorporate inserting Wesley Woodyard or Joe Mays at his position at right inside linebacker or moving outside linebacker Mario Haggan back inside and competing Jarvis Moss on the outside. None of those options are better than Williams, the intense tackler whose leadership has been praised abundantly by McDaniels and defensive coordinator Don Martindale in latest weeks.

Williams’ trouble comes only as the Broncos were talking about getting healthy following their bye week and exuding an confidence about salvaging their season and receiving back into the AFC West contest. The Broncos have depended on Williams more heavily this year with outside linebackers Elvis Dumervil (chest) and Robert Ayers (foot) sidelined, and he has reacted with a team-leading 3.5 sacks as well as a team-best 57 tackles, which put him on pace for a career-high 114.

Williams being a captain made his indictment all the more frustrating to an institution that’s been shrouded in negativity throughout a monthlong skid that included a 45-point loss at home to archrival Oakland at the sportsbook.
